Block 50 is the most coveted block of vines in Cumulus’ vineyards. These mature plantings have played a major role in establishing Orange as a world class wine region. 2006 was an ideal growing season, characterized by low crops in a warm, dry year other than some light rains just before harvest. Fruit for this wine was sourced from mature vines grown on rocky red soils, which are ideal for optimizing varietal Cabernet Sauvignon flavors. The wine macerated on skins for 10-20 days after fermentation to maximize quality grape-tannin extraction. The wine was then drained off skins and gently pressed, with only the lightest pressings included in the final blend. It was then oak matured in French and American oak barriques, after which it was fined, racked, filtered and bottled. The wine pours a Satsuma plum red in the glass. The aroma shows ripe berry fruit characters with great complexity and depth. On the palate, Block 50 Cabernet reveals complex forest berry fruits and mint with mocha secondary characters. Integrated oak, great length and soft tannins round off the palate. Drink now through 2013. Serve with roasted lamb and game with fresh herbs, especially thyme, rosemary and sage also vintage cheddar, osso bucco, red capsicum, basil and garlic, also Camembert, Gouda and Parmesan cheese.
