Wine Tasting Notes for Magistrate 2007 Merlot
Magistrate editions are limited production wines showcasing the world’s most prestigious vinicultural regions. These are rare finds, hand crafted vintages released to the off-market from renowned wine makers. When this production has been exhausted, there will be no more. Try one bottle, then return to fill your cellar. Seriously, there will be no more. Magistrate’s 2007 offering produced on 7989 cases of Napa Valley Merlot sourced from the Mayacamas Mountains. The Mayacamas Mountains are best known by one of their peaks: Mount Veeder. Mount Veeder is a volcanic peak, and the soils on the mountain are complex; they include ash, tufa, sedimentary soils, and lava. Many of the slopes are steep, requiring vineyard terraces. Annual rainfall averages 50 inches, roughly double that of the adjacent Napa Valley floor. With this abundant rainfall, mature vineyards can be dry-farmed. Dry-farming produces crops of small, highly flavorful grapes. This Merlot is no exception. Ripe fruit flavors and rich aromas of blackberries are overlaid with hints of vanilla, spicy cedar, and mocha. The mid-palate is soft and silky, the finish long and luxurious. Drink now through 2013. This wine is well-matched for the flavors of chicken, red meat, fish, lamb, pork, pastas, stews or well-aged cheeses.
